A _native_ 32-bit grub shouldn't have any problem. The reason we
can't build grub on a pure64 system is that it links to 32-bit
libraries for the user interface.

From memory, in chapter 7 we build a stand-alone version of lilo.
I forget the detail, but what have you got to lose by trying to do
what the book says ? Building lilo and bin86 takes a few minutes,
at that point you can try to run it - either it works or it doesn't.
If it doesn't, use a rescue CD if you can no longer boot your
ubuntu system.
But as I said, I believe you should be able to use your existing
grub.
