To help with development, subscribe to the clfs-dev mailing list (see http://trac.cross-lfs.org/wiki/lists) and start sending patches.  To clone one of the git repos, look at: http://git.cross-lfs.org/
If you're not familiar with git, check out the Pro Git book (http://progit.org/book/).
