I forgot to add in the post above that this line in the clfs instructions:-

ln -sv ld-2.12.so /lib/ld-linux.so.2

was not successful.  I searched the build tree 'eglibc-build' but there is no 
ld-2.12.so,  in fact there  is no  'ld-anything.so'

advice would be appreciated
