thanks a lot,  but the last time I tried compiling   grub2  for 64-bit only 
X86_64  it failed.     AND as  I said in my post :-

I generally do  x86_64  (chroot) builds  so
Is this an alternative to using lilo on x86_64 builds?

so I would be grateful if you could advise if  this method 
has been tested for  for x86_64 builds?
