Just thought I'd mention that the make check for dummy fails if you follow the book because 
chown -Rv nobody config.log {gnulib-tests,lib,src}/.deps

is missing 

and 
  53 of 333 tests failed
 (33 tests were not run)
 See tests/test-suite.log
 Please report it to bug-coreutils at gnu.orgFAIL: misc/invalid-opt.log (exit: 2)

or should one redo coreutils after Perl is completer???
